Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. See 1 John 3:1-3. Matthew 5:48

Have you ever wondered who God is? God is love! 1 John 4:8, 16. God designed everything He created to operate in harmony with His law of Love which is His creation freely giving to others. In other words the very basis of God is Love! You can’t say that God has a characteristic that’s called love. He is in fact Love!! God’s Agape Love is defined as “Giving”! Period! This love does not seek its own good at all, but rather the good of others.1Corinthians 10:24 1Corinthians 13:5. Certainly The Law of Love can be seen in nature. Romans 1:19-20. But the most powerful demonstration of God’s love is the Cross of Jesus. For God so loved that “He gave for His entire creation”. See John 3:16.

Now then, who is man? We are all sinners who are selfish through and through to the very core. Jeremiah says our heart is “deceitful and desperately wicked and who can know it”? Jeremiah 17:9-10. I know that sounds awful but unfortunately it’s what Adam chose for all of us.  Romans 3:9-12, 23. Through the blood line of Adam, we all have inherited this virus called “selfishness”.  It’s natural for us to look out for number one instead of serving others. See Isaiah 14:12-15 .   In other words, Sinning is simply the natural thing to do, the easy thing to do! And that includes all of us!! Psalm 51:4-5.

So Sinner’s sin! Right? I wonder why we are so shocked, and ready to condemn, when we see sinner’s doing what they do best? Any ideas?

But praise God that through another man, Jesus Christ, all are made righteous. Romans 5:12-19. And thankfully, where sin abounds Grace abounds much more! Romans 5:20-21.

What does it mean to be just like Jesus?  1John 3:2. Does Jesus mean sinless perfection?

If God is defined as love, (1John 4:8,16) which He is, then it seems to me we must be like Him in love! We are to love as God loves!

Just how does God love? Matthew 5:43-48 has the answer.

First right out of the gate, Jesus is not talking about sinless perfection in verse 48. So just what is it that Jesus means? How do I become perfect?

Jesus says, in verses 43-45: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,that you may be sons of your Father in heaven;

Wow!! How simple is that!! You mean you are to Love those who hate you? Those Who use you, who persecute you and who curse you? And you will be perfect if you love like that? Exactly!!! Now that’s getting a little more difficult huh. Thankfully that’s how God Loves us!

It’s really easy to love all those who come to Church or Gospel Fellowship! Right? Not hard at all!! But Jesus says what virtue is that?

Sticking to the context of these verses we must agree that Jesus is saying  “when you love like me”, you are perfect or simply stated “MATURE”

In fact my good friend, The Apostle Paul, says that loving my neighbor fulfills all of the law!! Romans 13: 8-10, Galatians 5:13-14. Further, John argues that we know God through loving one another! 1 John 4:7-11.

Being just like Jesus then, (1John 3:2) is not complicated, as we often make it! It simply is loving like Jesus loves! Let me put it this way! I need to spend time with Jesus so He can teach me how to love just like Him! Jesus craves a relationship with you!  John 17:3,26.

Being perfect or mature is the process by which all those who, Trust Jesus with their lives,(Romans 3:26) will progressively become more and more loving! This is truly being “Just Like Jesus”!! This process is also known as Sanctification , becoming more and more loving ,which is becoming  more and more”like Jesus” and ready for His soon coming. It’s “in His Love” that Jesus makes us just like Him! Ephesians 1:4 It’s God’s Love that causes us to trust Him and walk the walk with Him! Ephesians 1:12-14, 2:4-10. Ephesians 5:2.

Here is how Dr Timothy Jenkins puts it:

“God’s Love Heals. Jesus desires to live inside us through The Holy Spirit, who daily will make me progressively more and more loving.  God’s plan is to take humanity, damaged by sin, born with natural inclinations toward self-seeking, infected with the law of selfishness, and restore in us His law of love and liberty.  The Lord does not want simply to put His law in the mind as an idea to be believed, but rather to re-create us in the fullness of His image as living conduits of His Love. His law of love will permeate our entire being and become the wellspring of all action.  He seeks to elevate us from our fallen state of selfishness with its slavery to fear, insecurity, and feelings, so that we will once again occupy our noble station in God’s order.  Removing the selfishness from our minds, He will restore in us the living law of love and liberty.  Then we will once again stand as intelligent, self-governed, self-sacrificing friends of God—as the living repositories of His great law of love and liberty”.

But when do we reach sinless perfection?

Again quoting my friend The Apostle Paul with his simple answer: “In a moment of the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet sound”. This is when Jesus appears for the second time! Facts are Jesus is about to come! 1Corinthians 15:51-54. So when this great cosmic event occurs “we shall all be changed” and never ever have to worry about sin again! Ever!! Nahum 1:9 Isaiah 11:9 Revelation  21:4 . Praise God!! And all of this is a free gift from Jesus to you and me!! Alleluia!!

So what are we waiting for? Now is the time for me to be more and  more loving and hence more just like Jesus!! Its a free gift too!! Ephesians 2:8-9

Its really great news that Jesus will save me if I simply allow Him to come inside me through the Holy Spirit and completely change me , making me just like Him!! My assurance of Salvation is “in Jesus”. 1 John 5:11-13.

In the end it’s all about Jesus!1Corinthians 1:29-31. He is my victory and everything to me! He patches up my broken relationship  (1Corinthians 5:17-21) with Him and makes me just like Jesus! 2 Corinthians 3:18. He will then live out His life inside me, through The Holy Spirit, (Romans 8:2-4, 9-11) making me more and more loving and ready to live forever and ever with Him! This is really great news!! This is The Gospel!!

Listen my friend why not let Jesus cleanse you, transform you, set your relationship with  right with Him, and fill you with His Holy Spirit. He will save you completely!  He will finish the good work in you which He has begun! Praise God! Philippians 1:6.

Now this very moment is the time to accept Salvation from Jesus! “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of Salvation” 2 Corinthians 6:2.

When Jesus comes, He will be looking for those who have trusted Him with their lives! Period!  Romans 3:26. Romans 1:16-17.

What must I do? Simply accept Jesus and trust Him with your life! Period!  Acts 16:30-31, Romans 10:9-10. He will even draw you to Himself and save you!! “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” John 12:32. John 6:40, 47.

So I ask again, What are you waiting for? Why not accept Jesus right now!! He longs for you to come to Him just like you are!!          Revelation 22:7,12,17,20

He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God. Psalm 62:6-7.

Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your unfailing love. Psalm 31:16 NIV.

Jesus is coming quickly!! Revelation 22:20-21.

  1. But when do we reach sinless perfection?
    Using 1Corinthians 15:51-54. as an answer to this question is lost on me. The scripture refers to the new physical body as incorruptible and immortal. There is no reference to the spiritual state of the body. Those that are in Christ will be raised up at the last day, not those wallowing in sin. Wherefore are the 144,000 (literal or figurative) spoken of that sing a new song that only they can sing? Have I missed your point?

  2. Thanks for your comment very much Harold!
    “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” 1Corinthians 15:52. We will be raised incorruptible. Does that infer that we went to the grave corruptible? Our sinful nature is completely changed at the Second Coming of Jesus!!
    So I am simply stating what it plainly says as to when our sinful nature will be changed. I do believe as stated in Revelation 14:14-16 that we will have God’s love (Character) fully in our lives and hence be just like Him!! The more and more we love like Jesus the more and more we will be just like Him and ready for His coming!!
    Thank you again for your comment !! It’s wonderful to know that all who are seeking Jesus with all their heart can and will be lead into the truth as it is in Jesus, by the Holy Spirit! I truly appreciate your participation!! I am glad to continue the discussion as you see necessary!!

  3. Matthew 5:48 is talking about sinless perfection. Sin is loving self. In Matthew 5:48 and the surronding vereses Jesus is saying to love the way God loves. This takes care of the whole sin problem. Sin is not the occasional deed or misdeed, it is an attitude. My advice is to just fall in love with Jesus and leave the perfection up to Him. He can do more amazing things than we can comprehend. Just fall in love with Him and let Him take you wherever He wants. There are those who argue we can be perfect and there are those who argue we can’t. I am not in either camp. I am just in the camp that is in love with Jesus.

    • What I meant earlier when I said leave the perfection up to Jesus is, that while I believe the Holy Spirit has the power to keep us from sin, I do not believe that is God’s goal. God’s goal is for us to fall in love with Him.

  4. Thanks William
    Sin is loving one’s self for sure!! I am so in love with myself that I completely shut God out!!
    Matthew 5:43-45 tells us to simply love as God’s loves. Loving is exactly how we become mature or perfect if you want to use that term!!
    Your advice is well taken!! And its so very true!!
    Fall in love with Jesus and eternal life is yours!!
    God bless you and thanks William for the great post!!

  5. Whoa wait til I share this my peers! This went deeper than I have ever known. I have been praying to the Lord that he show me how to love and also to be more like Him! Never did I not it’s so simple as to love Him! My husband also has frustrated as he struggles with forgives and love now I can show this. I TRUELY believe now that the Holy Spirit sent me here and praise God for his swift answer to my prayer!

    • Thanks for visiting my blog Michelle!!
